In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, is the primary enforcement agency for mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), or commonly known as aerial work platform (AWP), safety on the jobsite. The OSHA standard that applies to these product types is CFR 29, Part1926.453 “Aerial Lifts.” All of the current ANSI standards are referenced in this section as “national consensus standards”.

The goal of the ANSI (and other) standards is to prevent accidents. Achieving this goal begins with the manufacturer ensuring that all aerial work platforms are designed and built in full compliance with the appropriate standards and continues as each entity in the safety chain (manufacturer — dealer — owner — user — operator) fulfills their responsibilities as described in the Manual of Responsibilities and in the operator’s manual for each machine.

All Genie^® MEWPs, including approved options and accessories, are designed and produced to meet the requirements of all applicable national standards. Genie ensures compliance in all cases by retaining an independent engineering firm to evaluate and verify that each model is in compliance with the most current standards.

The standards that each aerial work platform complies with are listed on the serial label of the machine, as well as on the product brochure and in the operator’s manual.

The following is a list of the standards in effect for the four product types produced by Genie at the time of publication:

Self-Propelled Booms:

• USA – ANSI/SIA A92.5
• Canada – CSA/CAN3 – B354.4
• Europe – EN 280 (and other CE standards as determined by the “notified body”)
• Australia – AS 1418.10

Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms (Scissors):

• USA – ANSI/SIA A92.6
• Canada – CSA/CAN3 – B354.2 and B354.3
• Europe – EN 280 (and other CE standards as determined by the “notified body”)
• Australia – AS 1418.10

Manually Propelled Elevating Work Platforms (AWP):

• USA – ANSI/SIA A92.3
• Canada – CSA/CAN3 – B354.1
• Europe – EN 280 (and other CE standards as determined by the “notified body”)
• Australia – AS 1418.10

Vehicle-Mounted Elevating Work Platforms (TZ):

• USA – ANSI/SIA A92.2
• Canada – CAN/CSA – C225-M88
• Europe – EN 280 (and other CE standards as determined by the “notified body”)
• Australia – AS 1418.10

In the USA, OSHA states that the ANSI standards “…are considered to provide employee protection equivalent to that provided through the application of ANSI A92.2-1969.” The 1969 ANSI standard was the only relevant standard in existence when OSHA first drafted the section for MEWPs. Importantly, 1926.453 is not considered by OSHA or industry experts to be as comprehensive a standard for design or use as the ANSI standards.

Nevertheless, Genie products comply with all relevant requirements of OSHA in addition to applicable ANSI requirements for all machines sold in the United States.
